Story Behind the Song

I Can’t Breathe. These harrowing words are now omnipresent in every protest, every march, every headline. The dire need for change and the impassioned fight for equity were catalyzed on May 25, 2020 when a police officer knelt on George Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 45 seconds that resulted in his death. The horrific scene was videoed and shared across the nation shining a light on the systemic racism that blazes throughout it. Silence is a form of acceptance, and, as the chorus proclaims, “Now seeing segregation and separation, is it time to hear out our wounded nation.” This song is an honest and earnest account of a tragic moment in history and the call to action to reflect on our own actions and decisions. George Floyd…everyone now knows his name.
