Songwriting Contests

Songwriting contests are just that.  Contests. A competition to see who stands out in a particular category. Namely:

  • Best Song

  • Best Written Piece of Music

  • Best Vocals

  • Best lyricist

  • Best, best, best…. Best.

I never really liked the word competition.  Well, not for art & music anyway.  I’m a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan… I love to watch them compete (and win).  But for music, poetry, painting… I don’t know, it seems like people are being judged on their souls. But that being said, how cool would it be to have one of the top coolest souls?  HA!

In all seriousness though, song competitions are cool.  They’re cool because they motivate artists to be the best they can be. When you motive an artist some pretty amazing things can happen and the best usually comes out in them.  Not to mention you can win prizes.  Some serious prizes too.  Money, studio time, musical equipment, professional recognition, bragging rights, etc.  I think the best part of a song competition (or any competition for that matter) is how hard we try.  We want to be the absolute best we can.  That’s an attractive trait in a person.  When a person wants to do their best and makes the effort it takes to be the best, it’s cool.  It’s hope.  It gives you something positive to look forward to in the morning and it’s fun.

“Song competitions” have come into their own in recent history and now more than ever and you do not have to know how to play an instrument or be an outstanding vocalist to win a musical competition.  That’s because technology has helped humans express our musical and lyrical abilities immensely.

Most song competitions are only songs – fully written pieces of music with a vocalist singing the lyrics.  But there are some contests that judge solely on lyric writing alone – as well as judging the songs and songwriters.  YourSongmaker.com is sponsoring the top prize in the lyric winner category this year (2019).  We’re working with the longest running song competition in the U.S.- The Great American Song Contest has been seeking great songwriters and lyricists for over 20 years.  It’s legit and exciting!
